By Dr. Deb Peabody, M.D.
I am a Family doctor, the hospice medical director for our community and a very proud member of the Healing Garden. I am here this afternoon to present the strategic vision of Amplifying the Science of Heart Coherence. As I started thinking about how best to present this to you, I initially went to the science part of my brain and considered talking about the science of heart coherence. But then, while in the shower ( I know TMI), I thought, wait a minute, although the the science is important, it is the idea and the practice that makes it so important to me personally and to our vision. I think the best way to present this is to tell you how I got here and why this is so near and dear to my heart.
As a Family Doctor, I went to medical school to help people to become healthy and to lead the best and happiest life possible. I worked for over 15 years in Lincolnville as a family doctor and loved working with patients and their families in helping them become healthy and well. I worked with patients with chronic illnesses such as obesity, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and autoimmune diseases etc. I spent a lot of time talking and encouraging my patients to consider making changes in their lives that would help them in the management of their disease in addition to the proper medications.
I spent a lot of my time educating my patients and I felt that I wasn’t able to get to the root cause of a person’s illness because there was not enough time in an appointment. I became very disappointed in the outcomes. I felt that I was working as hard as I could for my patients but the environment was just not conducive to helping my patients get well. So I left Lincolnville and Maine Health and went into private practice where I felt that I could have more time to get to the root cause of illness and to teach and encourage patients to make changes in their lives to become healthier. In my mind, that prescription for better health might be to eat a healthier diet, exercise regularly, sleep better, relax more with meditation or prayer and they would all be better.
After spending a lot of time working with patients on these recommendations, actually many of them did a really good job, but it wasn’t enough! I saw so much stress, anxiety and trauma in my patients and I felt that I just didn’t have the tools to help them. A pill wasn’t going to do the trick and even psychotherapy, although very helpful, seemed to be falling short. And then I met Diana as I was going through my own stressors and learned about Heart Coherence and it changed my life. I really felt that I had found the tool to augment good lifestyle choices and to overcome and cope with the stressors that we all are experiencing. I too suffer from stress and if I didn’t get my heart and brain coherent everyday, I would have a very difficult time making the decisions that I have to make. I would spend a lot of unnecessary time listening to the thoughts in my head second guessing what I know in my heart.
My dream…..our dream is to amplify heart coherence into our community. We would love to teach heart coherence to our teachers, nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers etc. We would bring heart coherence to the schools, clinics, hospitals and correctional facilities.
I dream of a time that if a child misbehaves in a class that rather than going to the Principal’s office for punishment, a teacher would provide a some heart coherence inner refreshment! Wouldn’t that be amazing!!!!
Thank you for your time and support of our vision. We are so excited about our future and the role that heart coherence plays in the future of medicine and health in our community.
Next Month: Michelle Walker our esteemed transformational life coach and self healing mentor who will share about our next strategic vision Unity Consciousness.
